Decorating a Nursery For Your New Baby

One of the most enjoyable tasks for the expectant mother is decorating the new baby’s room. It can be harder than you might think, however, to come up with the theme you want. Lots of ideas flow around your mind, and it can be hard to make a definite choice about how to decorate the baby’s room.

The first thing you will probably be wondering is about suiting the decoration to the baby’s gender. If you know the baby is going to be a boy, then should you choose something like cars and trucks, or for a girl something like fairies? If you can’t decide however or don’t know the gender of the baby, then it might be better to choose a fairly neutral theme for the nursery decoration.

If this baby is not your first, and is going to have to share their room with a brother or sister, then this needs to be taken into consideration too. You could choose to decorate the room with two different themes and color schemes, so that both children are accommodated.

This also has the advantage of creating separate spaces for each of them, though still in the one room.

Another point that has to be considered when you choose the nursery decorations is the theme’s possible life span. Will the baby still be happy with the way the room looks in a couple of years, or will you have to completely re-decorate again? You might enjoy decorating, but do you really want to re-do everything that soon?

For some people the easiest choice is to use neutral colors for the room’s decoration, and after that add some furniture, rugs and other accessories which help the room to be pleasant and comfortable for the baby as well as for the mother. This is where your baby will spend much of his or her time.

As he or she grows, you can change the rugs and furnishings accordingly.

Paint color and borders for the walls are decisions you will need to make with regard to your decoration project. If you don’t want to paint the walls, then you could also choose to use wallpaper. Also, do you want to carpet the whole floor or just have an area rug? There are lots of different area rugs to be found on the market these days, and you will be able to find one to suit any color scheme or theme you choose.

Furniture choice is the next matter to consider. What pieces would you like to have in the room? Will you choose a cot which can later be expanded into a single bed when the child is older, or will you choose a cot now and buy a bed later on? Would you like to have a rocking chair in the room, where the mother can sit as she breastfeeds the baby, or would you prefer an armchair?

There are in fact lots of things that you need to think about when you are planning the decorations for your baby’s room. The main thing to bear in mind, however, is that you should keep it simple, and enjoy the whole process too.
