What are Sideboards Exactly?

Sideboards are very popular pieces of dining room furniture that are found in homes across the country. These items were first built in the 18th century, but did not become widely used until the 19th century. It was at this point that a larger percentage of people had become wealthy enough to dedicate a room exclusively to dining and were more interested in these types of tables.  Europeans built the first models from oak, walnut, and pine but later American models were built mostly from pine and poplar.

These buffet tables stand approximately at waist height and are used as a surface to serve food, store dishware and other dining room items, and display art pieces. Most people imagine these tables in elaborate dining halls and their presence often suggests good taste and elegance.  As a result, sideboards are still manufactured mainly in antique styles, often with beautiful serpentine or curved fronts. Many pieces even have elaborate inlays on the surface or intricate woodworking designs to add to the sophistication of the room’s décor.

In recent years, however, many individuals have opted to use buffet cabinets in rooms other than the dining room. It is common to find these tables in living rooms, acting as a piece of decorative furniture or as a cabinet. These dining room cabinets are the perfect place to store extra blankets and pillows, candles, and board games. Beautiful doors hide these items away so that they do not clutter your home, but they are also close by when you need to use them.

People have also purchased these buffets as hall tables. They look great underneath a beautiful antique mirror so that you can fix your hat or makeup quickly right before you leave the house. It is a great place to put your keys down, so that you always know where to find them, as well somewhere to store hats, gloves, and scarves during the winter months.  Sideboards are a great addition to any home, whether you want to use it in a traditional manner as a table in your dining room or as a storage cabinet in your living room or hall. Simply make sure you purchase the buffet that fits best with the room’s current décor and it will be a piece of furniture that adds elegance to your home!
